How to Protect Skin Under a Hydration Vest

A hydration vest can carry everything you need for a long run, race day or full day on the trail – until one rubbing seam turns it into a distraction. Knowing how to protect skin under a hydration vest means dealing with friction before it starts, not trying to tough it out once your shoulders, ribs or lower back are already sore.

The good news is that vest chafing is usually preventable. A close, stable fit, the right layer next to your skin and targeted friction protection can make your vest feel like part of your kit rather than something you cannot wait to remove.

Why hydration vests cause chafing

A hydration vest moves differently from a standard running top. It sits close to the body, holds weight, collects sweat and can shift slightly with every arm swing, downhill stride or scramble over uneven ground. That repeated motion creates friction, especially when fabric becomes damp.

The usual hot spots are easy to recognise: the top of the shoulders, collarbones, sternum, side ribs, underarms, lower back and the points where chest straps or pack edges meet the skin. Some runners also experience rubbing around the neck or across the back of the arm, particularly if the vest is too large or worn over a loose top.

Chafing is not only about sensitive skin. Long duration, warm conditions, rain, salt from sweat and a heavier water load all change how your kit behaves. How to protect skin under a hydration vest before you run
